FALMOUTH – While many Maine businesses are struggling with a statewide worker shortage, a Falmouth business owner is being recognized for her success in hiring and retaining mature workers, many of whom are past retirement age.
Couleur Collection, a retail clothing boutique on Route 1 in Falmouth, was recently awarded a 2018 Silver Collar Award from the State Workforce Board’s Older Worker Committee. Marcia Feller, owner of Couleur Collection received the award for her commitment to hiring an older workforce and fostering a flexible work environment.
Feller has 11 people on staff, three full-time and eight part-time. Many have worked at Couleur Collection for more than a decade. In its 18th year, the business employs women in their 50’s through 70’s
“It is a very creative, active, engaged and community minded workforce. They work here because they get a lot of responsibility and we are extremely flexible and able to adapt to all the things that go on in our busy lives,” says owner Marcia Feller.
Maine is the oldest state in the nation, with a median age of 44.7 years. Today, workers age 55 and over comprise 28 percent of the labor force. Couleur Collection has created a model to keep those approaching or past retirement age in the labor pool.
“I congratulate this year’s winners for recognizing the value that different employees bring to our workforce,” said Governor Paul R. LePage. “Our state needs and values the contributions of all members of our workforce, no matter their age, and the Silver Collar Awards recognize businesses who put these values into action.”
The Silver Collar Employer Award honors employers whose policies and practices match the needs of mature employees, capturing their skills and experience, strong work ethic, flexibility and enthusiasm, according to the workforce board.
